ELA 8 [PERIODS 1 + 6]

Warm up 11.7

Imagine that Squeaky must give a speech when she accepts her prize. Write a speech in which she expresses her ideas on winning. Be sure to write about how Squeaky changes from being self-centered to being appreciative of other people.

Use at least one metaphor and one simile in your speech.

Lesson Objectives

1.Learn about the four most common forms of figurative expressions.

2.Use graphic organizers as a pre-write strategy.

3.Write an excellent five paragraph essay.


ELA Standards:
Reading 8.1.1 Analyze idioms, analogies, metaphors, and similes to infer literal and figurative meanings of phrases.

Reading 3.7 Analyze a work of literature, showing how it reflects the heritage, traditions, and attitudes of its author.

Lesson Tasks

1.Complete the warm up in your notebook without wasting time or off-topic conversation

2.Take notes in class as we work together to write an excellent essay.

3.Get your HW and notebook checked if you forgot last Friday!

HOMEWORK
Due Tuesday

1. Study for the selection test.

2. You should know the usage, examples and definitions for the five vocabulary words:

Relay, Clutch, Sidekick, Periscope, Prodigy

Re-read “Raymond’s Run and be able to answer questions about the characters and plot.


Know the definition and examples of the four types of figurative expressions: idiom, simile, metaphor, analogy

3. Find a book for SSR and your first book report. Bring the book to class on Tuesday and complete a preview form.

In your notebook, draw a thumbnail sketch of a scene from The Cay. You will be using this sketch to complete the homework assignment.

3. Record your HW assignment in your Binder Reminder

HOMEWORK
Due Tuesday:

Completed and colored sketch or collage with one paragraph caption.

You may use pictures from a magazine or websites, or may create original art and color it with markers or colored pencils.

Caption must appear under or next to illustration (on same side of the paper.)

1. Find a book for SSR and your first book report. Bring the book to class on Tuesday and complete a preview form.

2. Find someone that you can interview about their job. What questions will you ask? When can you conduct the interview?
